There are dozens of dishes indigenous to Serbia, and we are going to look into some of the most popular ones that will undoubtedly sweep you off of your feet. If you like how some of our suggestions sound and end up asking yourself, “Are there any good restaurants with Serbian food near me?” – we are the answer!

Top Serbian Foods to Try

While Serbian cooking typically revolves around using a lot of meat, we are going to try and create somewhat of a diverse list so that everyone can find something that fits their diet.

  • Cevapi

Cevapi, also known as Cevapcici, is one of the most popular Serbian foods because it’s incredibly tasty, easy to make, and quick to grill. In its essence, cevapi is a grilled dish made of minced meat. However, there are so many nuances and ingredients involved in the preparation that it’s pretty hard to simplify this dish and do it justice at the same time.

Cevapi is usually served in a flatbread, also known as lepinja, and it typically goes best with chopped onions and Kajmak cheese. If you’re looking for an authentic taste and a unique experience cevapi is a must-try.

  • Karadjordjeva Schnitzel

It’s a pretty simple dish, consisting of either rolled chicken or pork stuffed with kajmak cheese and typically served with tartar sauce. Its tender texture, coupled with strong kajmak cheese is a perfect combination of contrasts that will leave you speechless and make you come back for more.

  • Ajvar
Ajvar

Ajvar is the first food on our list that doesn’t contain meat, and it’s also somewhat of a side dish rather than a meal. However, it blends in perfectly with virtually any meal, thus being one of the most unique “salads” in the world. It’s made of red bell peppers, eggplant, and garlic. While it sounds relatively simple, cooking ajvar is considered an art, and every household in Serbia that makes it has its own unique recipe that is sometimes hundreds of years old.

If you’re looking for a perfect side dish, ajvar is a guaranteed hit.
